THE MOST COMMON AUTOMOTIVE EXHAUST PROBLEMS MECHANICS SEE

Exhaust systems last a long time but they need to be checked out by a professional regularly, especially if they are more than 5 years old. Learn more about the most common exhaust problems: Rust, Clogging, and Road Conditions.

RUST

Rust is the biggest problem of exhaust systems. It’s common in areas with cold weather, where road salt is often used. If you take frequent short trips, water vapor can collect in the exhaust system, which doesn’t become hot enough to burn off the vapor. Condensation then turns into rust that starts from the inside and goes outward. Accumulating rain, snow, salt and road dirt make holes in other parts of the system, including mufflers, pipes, resonators and catalytic converters. Corrosion could happen in connectors, flanges and heat shields.

CLOGGING

Internal parts that come loose can clog mufflers. Catalytic converters can also get clogged from a series of actions. If an oxygen sensor mounted in the exhaust system fails, the engine computer stops balancing the air and fuel mixture needed for proper combustion. If the mix has too much gas and not enough air, this hot blend will cause the clogging.

ROAD CONDITIONS

Bumps, potholes or rocks could also cause physical damage to exhaust system parts, either by putting holes in them or shaking them loose.
Even if nothing looks, sounds or feels wrong, checking the exhaust system is a good idea. Call Darrel’s Economy Mufflers to learn more about common muffler problems.
